BSL in Schools – Real Impact

St James’s CE Primary School

At St James’s CE Primary School, British Sign Language has been introduced across the whole school, creating a more inclusive and connected learning environment.

Children quickly embrace BSL, often picking up signs naturally and confidently using them in everyday situations — even chatting with each other in assemblies. For many students, particularly those learning English as an additional language, BSL supports communication, understanding, and confidence.

By introducing BSL as a second language, the school has created opportunities for students to better understand Deaf culture, develop empathy, and connect with the diverse community around them. It opens their eyes to the world on their doorstep while giving them a valuable, lifelong skill.

As students grow, they are also given the opportunity to progress further, with pathways into Level 1 and Level 2 BSL learning.
